Impacts of Global Warming

Over the past century, we, the humans have changed the earth’s atmosphere in dramatic ways resulting in global warming. At present, it’s the most controversial environmental issue. Global warming severely affects the natural balance of the environment and, as a result, the climate has gone through unwanted changes throughout the world.

The exchange of incoming and outgoing radiation that warms the earth surface is often referred to as the greenhouse effect because a greenhouse works in the same way. Indiscriminate use of fossil fuels, cutting down of the trees in abundance (deforestation) along with other factors have raised the percentage of greenhouse gases like CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases in the atmosphere.

These gases trap sun’s radiation and the temperature of the earth surface increases. As air moves around the world, greenhouse gases become globally mixed, causing the glaciers melting which eventually raises the sea level. This could result in the flooding of low-lying coastal areas and cities, such as Egypt, the Netherlands, and Bangladesh. Many areas of the world are experiencing increased hurricanes, floods, droughts, and other natural disasters. It also affects the aquatic and marine life of plants and animals. Damage in the ozone layer is the most threatening effect of global warming.

The impact of the increasing global warming could be extremely harmful. Apart from torrential rains causing floods, drought, forest pests and wildfires are happening. This abrupt change of temperature in different parts of the earth is making the water of the oceans warm. As a result of this, almost in every mountainous region across the world, glaciers are retreating. In one basin in Glacier National Park in Montana, for instance, two-thirds of the ice has disappeared since 1850. If we can’t put a check on uncontrolled warming, the remaining glaciers could disappear by 2030.

Global warming is no more a prediction or threat, it is happening, right now! And, the impact of the process on this planet is getting worse with every passing day. Humanity doesn’t have much time left. We should start working immensely on stabilizing the concentration of greenhouse gases to thwart devastating effects from climate change.

Small changes in everyone’s life can help to check global warming. Indiscriminate use of vehicles and machines producing gases like CO2 should be restricted, Co2 emission being one of the major factors of global warming. Instead, renewable and non-conventional energy sources like the wind, solar and hydel energy should be given preference. People should be advised to plant more and more trees as trees maintain the natural ecological balance. There should be well-planned and environment-friendly drainage system to pass away the waste products and chemical wastages from mills and factories.

The earth has its own natural balance. To make life thrive on the earth surface, we need to maintain it. Or else, humankind would be in great danger in the near future. By following easy and simple steps, we can be able to stop the huge negative changes in the atmosphere by lessening the effects of global warming and even stop it a day.

A Fantastico Trip With a Peppy Navigator

Friends are always a fun to be around, more so when you have some crazy, peppy friends! Any normal journey could become a fantastico adventure then! The closest circle of friends I have is a bunch of such guys. Five of us, whenever we used to meet on any occasion, we had loads of fun. This reached its crescendo when we all went onsite to the USA for six months. On weekends, we had nothing to do as such. None of us liked shopping and the list of things we all had from our families got done.

So, we decided to take a trip of the city we were staying, Los Angeles. Now, the thing is, none of us liked the concept of GPS because we didn’t want to be ordered by a mere mechanical device. We rented a car and decided to make the journey with the help of Google Maps and MapQuest. One of my friends, Avinash, took the place of the navigator. There was a risk, obviously, to drive without GPS, but we didn’t care.

So, our journey began at 8.00 am in the morning. It was a pleasant day and we were in a jovial mood. Nothing special happened as such as we visited a few places following the tourist guide. We were enjoying ourselves to the fullest.

After having our lunch at a cafe, Avinash was pondering over the road Atlas. After all, as the navigator, he had some responsibilities. Suddenly he announced that there was a beach  a few miles away and suggested that we should be there. So far he did his navigation job quite well, so none of us had any doubt of his skill. It sounded wonderful to  be at the beach in the afternoon, so we unanimously supported him.

This time, Santa, another friend, took the driving seat. I was feeling very sleepy and as soon as the wheels started to move, I dozed off.

I woke up suddenly as all four of the rest were almost shouting over something. It took me some time to get the situation. Then I understood that we were moving for almost an hour with no sign of beach anywhere. Everybody was excited and all of them started a heated argument as what to do next, which way to go.

Avinash tried to pacify us. He was still very much confident about the existence of the beach somewhere nearby. He kept on saying,“aare yaar, thoda toh sabar karo. mil jayega”, as if we were at a random search!

However, after about 45 minutes, when we had lost all hopes about the beach, he shouted excitedly,”the beach is right there, take the next exit and just half a kilometer”.

We were visibly relieved. After 10 more minutes, we reached the spot and was taken aback! It was not a sea beach, it was a market complex named “The Beach”!!

We all burst into laughter seeing Avinash’s expression. It was one of the most amusing moments of my life.

But we learnt the lesson of the lifetime. It’s always wise to use GPS when one has a navigator like Avinash!

Impacts of Advertisements

Advertisements are paid forms of mass communication, done to persuade the consumers with an ultimate objective of passing on the information, or publicizing a product, idea or service that might stimulate the viewers to go for it. It is the most important aspect of marketing in the modern society and indeed has deep impacts on our social and psychological being.

There are many sources through which one can advertise their products or service. Ranging from a simple notice on a wall to a million-dollar assignment with some celebrity endorsing a product. Advertisements are all around us. When we step outside the house, billboards appear in front of us. Continuous exhibition of products can be seen on television and newspapers and on the internet. In this highly competitive world, advertising does make either a product a hit or a miss. Everyone and everything need propaganda for selling, for which advertising seems to be the perfect solution.

Since India has opted for the open economy policy, global brands have found their way in the country. Advertisement helps a lot to make people aware of such brands. Influencing audiences through video commercials are the easiest way to promote anything as it leaves a strong and lasting impact on the mind.

In the recent years, advertisements have taken a distinct place in our everyday life. The question is, do they have positive or negative impacts? I would like to say, both.

Advertisements make us aware of the newest techniques, products and information. We can get news on different things through them. Advertisements celebrate change and internalize change for those who become better by using a certain product or service. We can compare different brands and choose from a range of products. Thus, in a way, they help to keep monopolization at bay.

But, everything about advertisements is not so bright. Advertisements awaken greed inside us. A consumer gets allured by the dazzle of advertisements. They try to diminish the difference between a consumer’s need, want, and aspirations. No one can deny the fact that at some point of life, they’ve bought things which were not needed at all, and he/she just had fallen to the temptation of the advertisements.

Children are perhaps the worst affected. Their tender minds are gullible enough to believe in all that are shown and said in an advertisement. My seven-year-old niece, after watching a popular advertisement of a particular chocolate bar, really began to think that would make her forget all worries!

Even adults are not spared. Some advertisements make young generation too much obsessed or sensitive about their physical attributes and they develop certain complexes. To boost the sale and win over customers, companies often pour a great amount of money on advertisements. The good feeling of possessing a certain expensive brand is instilled in the consumer and he/she yearns to own that particular product even when that is beyond their reach. Thus, a psychological pressure is created on the consumer which is not healthy at all.

However, it’s not possible to stay away from advertisements in today’s world. They are an essential part of the society.  Rather, we should try to use our intellect and wisdom to judge a product before believing blindly in advertisements.
